Temple's Terrific Advisory August 29

This week's journal question is:  You and your friends have claimed an uninhabited island as a new country.  You have been selected to be the new government.  Your first assignment is to make the following decisions and accomplish the following tasks:

1.  Name the Country

2.  Appoint you and your friends to government offices.  Say who you chose and why.  (you may choose outside of your friend circle:  President, VP, Treasurer, Secretary of State, Heads of the following departments:  Education, Environment, Homeland Security, Defense)

3.  State one law that is critical to your country.

JOURNAL is due by Friday, September 3.

Lunch for the week of August 30 is:

Monday is Quesidillas

Tuesday is Pizza

Wednesday is Teri Chicken

Thursday is Hamburgers

FRIDAY'S GROUP IN SCHOOL WILL BE THE COLOR RED.  Everyone will have a Language Arts virtual study to do with Mrs. Temple in Engineering.

There are is a sad party this week as we say goodbye to Nick Greathouse.  We will miss him but wish him great times in San Jose.

Class Rotation:

Math will be in the stage

Social Studies in the balcony

Language Arts in the lab

Science in the library

We will be outside for our Advisory Time.  (Monday - Advisory - a goodbye activity, Tuesday and Wednesday is SSR. Thursday we will be finishing up our name bubbles andhaving a grade check, binder check etc.)

Remember, tutoring is Monday and Wednesday.  Some of you need to come to finish work.  Some clubs have started:  Tuesdays (everyother) is Art or Agriculture Club and dancing club, Wednesdays is singing and instrument lessons and Thursdays are drama.  HONU HEROES will be starting next Wednesday, September 8 from 2:45 until 3:45 and meet every Wednesday.

Have a GREAT week!

Afternoon Class

We will be working on a probability problem with the casino game Roulette.

Our Question will be:  Can you better your chances on a roulette wheel using math probability?

Each student will be making their conjecture on this question after completing their research.  We will have a physical roulette wheel and compare it to the game on the internet.  The students will be looking at all of the ratios to win and try to find a pattern to follow.

Many systems have been used to try and find a way to win the game of chance however, few have come up with an answer to the math probability.  Some have found ways to motivate the spin however as Albert Einstein said "The only way to beat roulette is to steal the money".

The first lessons will concentrate on the engineering design and function of the wheel and in physics using Sir Issac Newton's laws of momentum.

Vocabulary words that will be important for this unit:  Physical, function, circumference, momentum and probability.

We will also discuss popular systems and strategies as well as the pranks of the University of Cal Berkeley on how they won one summer.  The students will also be working with the Fibonacci System.

The students will do research about the game and have many times to gather their data.  They may work with partners or by themselves.

Class D August 29

Homework:  2 Adaptive Curriculum lessons on ratios and probability trees

                 Precent Work Sheet

Journal:  1. Write the equation for a linear relationship and tell what each part means.

                              2.  Describe the graph of a line that has a negative slope.

                              3.  Explain how you would check whether the point 2, 7.5 is on the line with equation

                                   Y = 3x + 0.5.

This journal should be three 5 sentence paragraphs - one for each question.

We began this week by reviewing our percent work.  The students now have had many practices and are getting close to taking their quiz on this portion of our basic studies.  We are still working on clearing up misconceptions that seem to come along with percent work.

After completing our basic lesson, we went on to review for our quiz.  The students will be taking a quiz on all of the learning we have done since the beginning of the school year featuring tables, graphs and linear equations.

Upon completing their quiz, we will begin working on non linear graphs.  We will go back to our bridge experiment that we began the year with but instead of seeing the different thicknesses of bridges and how many pennies they could hold, we will test different lengths of suspension bridges to see what weight they can hold.  While working on our experiment, we will be making tables and graphs for the non linear data.

Class B August 29

Homework:  2 Adaptive Curriculum lessons on ratios and probability trees

                 Precent Work Sheet

Journal:  1.  What are the advantages and disadvantages of a table?

                              2.  What are the advantaes and disadvantages of a graph?

                              3.  What are the advantages and the disadvanages of a written report?

After completing our basic lesson, we went on to review for our quiz.  The students will be taking a quiz on all of the learning we have done since the beginning of the school year featuring tables, graphs and working with variables.

Upon completion of the quiz, the students will begin working on the budget for their bike trip.  The students will need to work on how much money they will need, how to choose rental bikes, hotel and food prices etc.  They each have $500 to spend for the entire trip.  One of our field trips will be to Times Market to comparison shop for the best deals for the first part of the trip.  Due to the fact that they will be backpacking, they are going to have to consider price, weight of the food, while checking carbs for energy on the trip.

All of the graphs and tables they have completed will be edited to be put into their final project for the quarter.
